🌏 The Brau Ethnic Group: History & Origins

📍 Region: Dak Me Village, Kon Tum Province, Vietnam
✨ Highlights: Tri-border cultural heritage, Mon-Khmer roots, 525 individuals

The Brau (also known as Brao) ethnic group is a small minority community in Vietnam with fewer than 1,000 people. With the support policies of the State, their lives are steadily improving, and their traditional culture is being preserved and promoted—a journey of preservation that reflects the vibrant history found in the Ba Na Ethnic Minority.

Historical Origins

The ancestors of the Brau originally resided in southern Laos and northeastern Cambodia. A small group migrated to Vietnam approximately 150-160 years ago, and they have lived in the tri-border area of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia ever since.

Population & Distribution

According to the 2019 Census, the total population of the Brau ethnic group is 525 people. The majority (94.7%) live in rural areas, primarily concentrated in Dak Me village, Bo Y commune, Kon Tum province.

Language & Education

Their spoken language belongs to the Mon-Khmer branch, a linguistic root that connects them to the broader heritage of the region, much like the Bo Y Ethnic Group. Modern education is now a priority, with literacy rates rising among the younger generations.
