🌏 The Brau Ethnic Group: Traditions

📍 Region: Central Highlands (Kon Tum Province), Vietnam
✨ Highlights: Tooth Filing Rite, Traditional Stilt Houses, Communal Village Layout, Unique Cuisine

The Brau people live in close harmony with nature. Promoting sustainable tourism in these remote communities helps preserve their beautiful environment and cultural heritage, a philosophy of preservation that is equally emphasized by the Ba Na Ethnic Minority.

Food & Cuisine

The Brau diet is unique, characterized by sticky rice cooked in bamboo tubes (bamboo rice), alongside plain rice cooked in clay pots. They enjoy cane wine and have a cultural practice where both men and women smoke tobacco using cloth-wrapped pipes.

Clothing & Rites

Men traditionally wear loincloths, while women wear wrap-around skirts. A distinctive feature is the custom of stretching earlobes for heavy jewelry. Notably, young people aged 15-16 undergo a tooth filing ritual to signify their integration into the adult community.

Housing & Architecture

Brau villages feature a unique circular layout, with houses arranged like the petals of a flower. They reside in raised-floor stilt houses with high-sloped roofs. The interior floors are split into levels to distinguish between different living areas, representing a communal architectural style similar to the Bru Vân Kiều Ethnic Group.

Social Relations

Brau society maintains a system of nuclear families with a strong emphasis on gender equality. While class divisions between rich and poor have existed, they also preserve vestiges of a maternal family system.
