✨ Highlights: Lac Viet Heritage, Unique Language Subgroups, Traditional Culture Preservation

The Bo Y ethnic group is one of the 16 ethnic groups with the smallest population within Vietnam's community of 54 ethnic groups. To this day, they continue to preserve the cultural essence and beautiful traditions unique to their heritage, sharing a level of historical depth found in the Brau Ethnic Group.

Historical Origins

The ancestors of the Bo Y are believed to be a branch of the "Lac Viet" people within the ancient Bai Viet block. They refer to themselves by various names such as Bo Y, Bo Trong, Bo Man, Lieu, Trong Gia, Ly Lieu, and Di Lieu.

Geography & Distribution

The Bo Y group in Ha Giang province resides primarily along the Nhiem and Nho Que rivers, settling in various communes across Dong Van and Quan Ba districts. Their adaptation to the rugged terrain is quite remarkable, showing resilience similar to the communities of the Bru Vân Kiều Ethnic Group.

Demographics & Language

According to the 2019 census, the Bo Y population stands at 3,232 people (1,695 male and 1,537 female). Their language varies by subgroup: the Bo Y group (Pu Y) speaks a Tay-Thai language, while the Tu Di group speaks a Han-Tibetan language.

Education

Education is highly valued within the community. Literacy rates for those aged 15+ reach 80%, with primary school attendance nearly universal at 100.6%.
